Orphan Care Art!

So, over the weekend, a local church in my town {Wilson Community Church} kicked off a fundraiser for their Orphan Care Ministry. This church has done an exceptional job of responding to God’s command to care for the orphan.

“Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed.” -Psalm 82:3

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” -James 1:27

Personally, this type of ministry really hits home for me. I was adopted as a baby. And I have known my whole life I would adopt. My husband and I are certain that God is calling us to adopt and while we know some of those specifics, I will wait till those doors are a little more open to share with all of you what that will look like. But for now we are praying and waiting until that time God tells us is right to go get our kids…from somewhere!

I know our foster care system in the US tries hard but at the end of the day, I think we could all say that we would rather {if we had the choice} to be raised in a loving home rather than in the foster care system. I feel incredibly blessed to have been taken out of the foster care system and raised in a home by two parents who loved me, cared for me, and gave me the same rights and privileges as their biological children. It painted such a beautiful picture of the gospel in my heart so one day, when I would hear a preacher speak from Romans 8, it would resonate deep within my heart because I have lived it.

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” -Romans 8:15-17

This is why the gospel of Jesus Christ is beautiful! He has rescued us! IF we become whole-hearted followers of Jesus then we are no longer slaves as we once were to our sin, but now we have received the Spirit of ADOPTION! Wow! He is a personal, intimate God who loves us like a Daddy, in fact, “Abba” translates to “Daddy”. How beautiful, that this relationship between God and us is not formal and distant like we deserve, but it is close, and comforting and sweet. If that wasn’t enough, God made us His heirs {since we are now his children} and get this, co-heirs with Jesus Christ. How is that even fair? It’s not. You cannot read this passage and say that God is not graceful, generous and forgiving. Our sin is what put His son to death on the cross yet, He would forgive us if we just ask and then give us the same inheritance as His son, whom we killed. This is just unimaginable to me. Put that in terms with your own children if you have them. Could you be that gracious? That forgiving? I would like to think in my self-righteousness that I could, but I’m just not sure….honestly, probably not.

So, I don’t mean to say all that to guilt you into supporting the cause of the orphan, but maybe a good reminder for where we all stand. If we are believers in Christ, then we are adopted. So we have had that grace extended to us. Orphan care also does not just mean go adopt a kid. It is supporting places that care for the orphans of our world, so they may receive better education, nutrition, love, etc. It means supporting or considering foster care. It means loving on those kids. There are a million ways this can be done and the Orphan Care Ministry at WCC is doing this locally and globally, which I love.

By purchasing either of these prints you will be supporting their ministry and in that, supporting the cause of the orphan.

This first print is an 11×14 on white cardstock ready to frame! It is completely hand-drawn and conceptualized, with custom-mixed ink and a modern hand of calligraphy to letter Isaiah 43:6. This is just a beautiful verse for anyone as we are all God’s children and that is what the verse is speaking about. But I think it can be really neat if you or someone you know is adopting or has adopted.

What a powerful verse! No matter what you are going through, we are all waiting on something in life: test results, a child, a job, an opportunity, a relationship to be mended, whatever, we often times find ourselves waiting and praying for something. And we know that in this waiting time, if we can keep faith and continue to pour our heart before the Lord, He is so, so faithful to strengthen us. I wanted to provide this print so that way anyone could purchase it to support the Orphan Care Ministry, but it is not a print that is only for families who are adopting. This could be great for you, a friend or family member who just needs that reminder everyday. Lord knows, I need it! It is an 8.5×11 hand-lettered, chalkboard style print.

Both of these you will find in the shop and as always, to purchase, please email orders to heatherslettersdesign@gmail.com and I will send them out as soon as possible! Thanks for supporting this great ministry that really, truly is being the hands and feet of Jesus and loving on the fatherless of this world.
